IRSCNA: Boycott NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade « Result #5 on Mar 16, 2006, 12:34am »
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
15 March 2006 Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America
Boycott the New York City Saint Patrick's Day Parade
On behalf of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement, the Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America issue the following statement about the continued exclusion of Irish and Irish Americans who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered from the annual Saint Patrick's Day parade in New York City and endorse the call for a boycott of the parade.
The New York City Saint Patrick's Day parade is the largest Irish-themed parade held in the United States every year. The parade organisers have repeatedly barred Irish and Irish Americans who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered from marching in the parade under their own banner. The parade is organised by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a sectarian and reactionary organisation which believes it has a right to decide who can and can't celebrate their Irish heritage in public on Saint Patrick's Day in New York City. The first St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City was held in 1762 and was organised by Irish Protestants as a public protest to fight widespread discrimination against Irish people.
We endorse the call of the Irish Queers organisation for a boycott of the parade. Irish Queers will hold a sideline protest and picket on the east side of Fifth Avenue at 57th Street beginning at 10:30 am on March 17th. We call on everyone who supports equal rights for sexual minorities, and anyone who opposes sectarian organisations like the AOH hijacking a parade that is supposed to be about expressing pride in Irish heritage to boycott the parade and participate in this protest. We especially call on republicans and republican socialists to stand in solidarity with Irish or Irish Americans who are being discriminated against by a group of bigots.
This is nothing new for the New York City parade, which has also historically excluded people of color, women, and people in wheelchairs until resistance forced the AOH to change those policies. In the early 1980s, activists protesting the British government's policy of criminalising republican and republican socialist prisoners of war were attacked and forcibly removed from the parade. In 1991, the AOH physically ejected supporters of political prisoner Joe Doherty for wearing sashes in support of the campaign to free him. Members of the Bloody Sunday Campaign attempting to draw attention to the thirteen unarmed civilians murdered at a civil rights protest in the North of Ireland were also banned from participating. Activists opposing the imprisonment of Bernadette Devlin McAliskey's daughter Roisin were thrown out for handing out roses to call attention to her case.
For over thirty years, the Irish Republican Socialist Party has supported equality for gays and lesbians, beginning with the party's first Ard-Fheis (convention) in 1975, when it became one of the first parties in Ireland to support gay rights. The IRSP became the first party in Ireland to explicitly include bisexuals and transgendered people in the equality statement passed at its 2000 Ard-Fheis, which stated, "The IRSP affirms its commitment to full equality for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people."
In conclusion, we stand with Irish Queers in saying that Saint Patrick's Day in New York City should be a celebration for all people of Irish descent, not just those who are heterosexual Catholics. Catholic, Protestant, or Dissenter; heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered; we all have a right to express pride in our Irish heritage and this is what the New York City Saint Patrick's Day parade should celebrate, the diversity of the Irish and Irish Americans instead of a narrow minded and exclusionary definition of who is Irish.
IRSCNA Condemns Israeli Siege of Jericho Prison « Result #6 on Mar 16, 2006, 12:31am »

IRSCNA Condemns Israeli Siege of Jericho Prison
On behalf of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement, the Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America issue the following statement condemning Israel's assault on Palestine's Jericho Prison and the arrest of six members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, including PFLP General Secretary Ahmad Sa'adat.
On Tuesday, 14 March 2006, the Israel Defense Forces laid siege to Jericho Prison in the West Bank to arrest six PFLP activists, including those who allegedly ordered and carried out the 2001 assassination of Israeli cabinet minister Rehavam Ze'evi. The siege occurred only after American and British monitors, stationed there as part of a compromise reached between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, deliberately withdrew from their posts, making the US and Britain complicit in what happened.
Israel considers Sa'adat to be the mastermind of the Ze'evi assassination. Although held in a Palestinian prison as part of the compromise between Israel and the PA, Sa'adat ran for election to the new Palestinian parliament from his prison cell and six weeks ago won a seat in the parliament. PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas was under pressure to release a man the Palestinian people elected to office and Hamas said they would release him once they formed the new government. Rather than see him released, Israel decided to lay siege to the prison until he and the five other PFLP activists surrendered and were taken into Israeli custody. During the siege, three Palestinians were killed. In response, Abu Jbarah, a spokesperson for the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades (the PFLP's military wing), stated that "we will respond and respond strongly whether he is harmed or not."
In conclusion, we in the Irish Republican Socialist Movement condemn Israel's siege of Jericho Prison in violation of Palestinian sovereignty. We also condemn the arrest of an elected member of the Palestinian parliament and five other activists imprisoned for their roles in the national liberation struggle of the Palestinian people. This was undoubtedly a deliberate provocation by Israeli Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in an attempt to boost his image before the upcoming election in Israel. We condemn Olmert and the Israeli government while we stand in solidarity with our allies in the PFLP and the Palestinian people. To the latter we quote the last words of Irish National Liberation Army hunger striker Patsy O'Hara: "Let the fight go on!"

Pensioner dies in fire Newtownhamilton Co Armagh « Result #7 on Mar 11, 2006, 12:13pm »
An elderly man has died in a house fire in County Armagh. A neighbour heard a smoke alarm going off at a house in the Dungormley estate in Newtownhamilton at about 0400 GMT.
He found the pensioner in the living room and managed to pull him from the blaze. However, the elderly man was already dead.
His name has not yet been released. The fire service is treating the death as accidental. Newry and Armagh MP Conor Murphy said residents were shocked.
He praised the action of the man who tried to save him.
"A young neighbour made an attempt to try to get into the house to try and rescue the older man to pull him out to safety," he said.
"It was a very courageous attempt and typical of the kind of neighbourly sense of community that there is in Newtownhamilton. Regrettably it was not enough."

Loyalists launch murder campaign
Red Hand Defenders say all republican ex-prisoners are considered ‘targets again’ in call to Daily Ireland
by Ciarán Barnes
06/03/2006
Loyalist paramilitaries have launched a fresh murder campaign against republican ex-prisoners. A caller to Daily Ireland last night, claiming to represent the Red Hand Defenders, said that as of midnight last night all republican ex-prisoners are considered “legitimate targets again”. Using a recognised code word, he claimed responsibility for the attempted murder of a Catholic taxi driver in north Belfast on Saturday night. The caller claimed the target was a former IRA prisoner and added that similar attacks would follow. The Red Hand Defenders has been used as a flag of convenience for a number of loyalist paramilitary organisations, most notably the Ulster Defence Association. Using the Red Hand Defenders name, the north Belfast UDA murdered three young men — Gavin Brett, Danny McColgan and Gerard Lawlor — in 2001 and 2002. After a major PSNI operation against the north Belfast UDA which resulted in 17 arrests last Thursday, Sinn Féin warned the group was preparing to target nationalists. Eleven of those arrested are to appear before Belfast magistrates’ court today charged with helping to set up a meeting supporting a banned group. Seven are charged with wearing clothes associated with a paramilitary group. The cab driver at the centre of Saturday’s murder bid had been called to pick up four males at the Mater hospital in north Belfast. He works for a firm in the nationalist New Lodge area of the city. As he drove them to the Ligoniel district, one of the men placed a pistol against the back of his head. The weapon jammed as he pulled the trigger. A struggle then broke out and the driver managed to run from the car. The men then fled from the scene, running off into the loyalist Ballysillan area. Sinn Féin councillor Carál Ní Chuilín said loyalist paramilitaries are actively targeting the nationalist community. “After the arrests of a number of leading loyalists in north Belfast recently it was only a matter of time before their supporters lashed out at the nationalist community,” she said. “This taxi driver is lucky to be alive. This was a pre-planned sectarian murder bid.” Detectives investigating the murder bid are understood to be examining CCTV footage taken for the Mater hospital and from a security camera at the Carlisle Circus roundabout. The gunman is believed to be approximately 25-years-old, with short ginger hair. He was wearing a washed-out denim baseball cap and had a bruised left eye.
